For the rest of you who are considering this alternative, but have limited your sewing ability to darning socks and hemming pants and dresses – you may not know it but you are ready to take on a new challenge.
If you check out the notions stores in your area, you may find a myriad of patterns. This may produce a cold sweat as you contemplate the task ahead. Don’t worry; there is a wonderful book available called “Sewing for Dummies” which is available at a price of $4.00 (used).

There are also sites online wherein women who have never made clothes before comment on their experiences. Once they’ve learned the basic steps, they become quite acute in not only designing clothing, but making it from scratch and being proud of it.
Fabric is very affordable and you can make different kinds of clothing using one particular pattern. You can also change the color of the fabric, the type, add trim, lengthen or shorten existing clothing, changing the neckline, or whatever you can do to make an existing piece of clothing look new and different.
Many years ago there was a class given at Singer Sewing Center in Manhattan. Over a course of several weeks, one could learn to handle a sewing machine, design a dress, choose a fabric, and work on the final product.
Today, you have many more options available to you. Between online resources and TV shows highlighting sewing lessons, the book “Sewing for Dummies” is a great beginning for those who have not traveled down this path before.
